South Bay : POISON MARSH
The residents of the Carson Harbor Village mobile home park recently learned that the marsh in the middle of the property has lead in the soil.
No one is sure how the lead got there, but experts speculate it came from rainwater spilling from the nearby Artesia Freeway.
“That land has served as a natural filter for a lot of years,” said Ken James, who heads the company that manages the 420-unit mobile home park on 77 acres. “I guess it could only take so much.”
The 12-acre marsh, which also serves as a conduit through which several storm drains dump their runoff, is off-limits to residents.
Crews have removed several truckloads of soil from the marsh, but tests are under way to ensure that none of the remaining soil is hazardous.
