Anita Perez Ferguson, a two-time Democratic congressional candidate in Ventura County, has been named the president of a national political organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in public office.

Perez Ferguson, 46, will soon become the ninth president and first Latina to lead the Washington, D.C.-based National Women’s Political Caucus, according to a statement from the group.

Perez Ferguson, who got her start in politics as an aide to former state Sen. Gary K. Hart (R-Santa Barbara), made two unsuccessful bids for Congress in 1990 and in 1992.

A longtime Santa Barbara resident, she lived in Oxnard for a few months in 1992 while running against Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley).

After the campaign, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she trained congressional candidates for the Democratic National Committee and was a liaison between the White house and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Perez Ferguson has been active in the caucus since the early 1980s and has served two terms as its first vice president.
