Employees of the Los Angeles Harbor Department are furious that they were not consulted in a cost-cutting plan that could eliminate 269 jobs.
At a meeting last week, more than 100 workers blasted the plan, which also includes proposals to sell off San Pedro port properties, including the 1,800-slip Cabrillo Marina, and to close a day care center that serves 60 children.
Although the port makes a sizable profit, a recent report showed that its profit margin was lower than that of similar-sized airports.
The commissioners did not ignore the workers’ protests. Last week, they agreed to postpone their decision on cutbacks until they receive more comments from employees and the public.
