Teaching challenging topics such as calculus and linear algebra will never be easy.

But instructors at Golden West College have designed a computer-aided project to facilitate teaching--and learning--in a variety of mathematics classes.

As a result, college President Philip Westin said, the school recently won a $35,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

The grant will be used to convert four classrooms into multimedia classroom- laboratories, each equipped with two large-screen monitors and a computer capable of running a variety of software.

Mathematics professor Jack Wadhams said the redesigned classrooms will accomplish several goals. Those include “reducing student frustration, enhancing communication with native and non-native English speakers, improving student problem solving and modeling skills, and modifying the instructor’s role from that of a lecturer to coach,” he said.

The target students for the project will be those enrolled in pre-calculus, calculus, linear algebra, discrete math, statistics and math for elementary teachers.
