Cambodia’s secretary of education, looking to rebuild his country’s educational system, is turning to the United States and Long Beach in search of a model.
Secretary Sahan Kea, who has spent the past month visiting schools nationwide, met this week with administrators and teachers from the Long Beach Unified School District and officials at Cal State Long Beach.
Kea said he hopes to apply some U.S. teaching methods to his country’s educational system.
“We are rebuilding the whole system,” said Kea. “To the year 2000, we are trying to ensure that all Cambodian children of school age complete at least a primary education. That’s the first step.”
During the Pol Pot regime from 1975 to 1979, more than 75% of Cambodia’s teachers were killed and most of the others left the country.
