Daily News Had a Way With Words
I thoroughly enjoyed Josh Getlin’s article on Joe Kovach, former editor of the New York Daily News (“The Tab Man,” July 28). It is a beautifully written paean to a bygone era.
The News’ most memorable headline, “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD,” reminded me of another great one during the Korean War. The North Koreans had pushed our troops back to the tip of the peninsula, and the situation was desperate. Gen. Walton Walker rallied his forces with a blunt challenge.
As the Daily News wrote it: “WALKER: STAND OR DIE.”
They stood.
And soon thereafter, Gen. MacArthur commanded an end-run amphibious landing at Inchon that cut off the enemy from reinforcements, and saved our army.
