Vitesse Semiconductor Corp., based in Camarillo, has developed a fourth-generation process for making its gallium arsenide computer chips. The company claims that its chips are faster and more efficient than rival silicon-based chips.

The new process, called H-GaAs IV, offers significantly improved data-storage capacity, speed and power over its predecessors, Vitesse says. To reduce cost, plastic packaging has replaced ceramic materials, the firm added.

Initial products using the process will be unveiled later this year, Vitesse said.
