Van Nuys : Youth Games to Draw International Athletes

The Jewish Community Centers Maccabi Youth Games, featuring 1,100 young Jewish athletes from the United States and other countries, will kick off Sunday in Van Nuys.

Bob Saget, host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” will preside over the opening ceremonies set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Birmingham High School, 17000 Haynes St., Van Nuys. An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people are expected to attend.

Enriching Jewish identity and fostering democratic values through athletic competition are the primary goals of the games, according to organizers.

Boys and girls ages 12 to 16 will compete in 13 team and individual sports including baseball, soccer and swimming. Games will be played Monday, Tuesday and Aug. 17 at venues throughout the Valley.

This year marks the first time since its 1982 inception that the games have been held on the West Coast. In addition to the local games, there will be regional competitions in Columbus, Ohio; Houston, Tex.; Orlando, Fla.; and Long Island, N.Y.

There is no admission charge for spectators. Seating for the opening ceremonies is available on a first-come, first-served basis. For a schedule of events, contact any local Jewish Community Center or call (818) 587-3212.
