John Wayne Fares Less Well: Southwest Airlines is flooding the Southland airwaves with advertisements for its $49 tickets to the Bay Area and $89 to Portland or Seattle. But before you start packing, look at the fine print: John Wayne Airport is excluded.

Southwest spokeswoman Linda Burke Rutherford said that Orange County was not included because of restrictions on the number of flights at John Wayne and because all the flights there are flying mostly full.

“We conduct a fare sale to create interest and stimulus,” which the market here doesn’t need right now, she explained.

The discount tickets out of Los Angeles International or other Southland airports require a seven-day advance purchase and the deal ends Aug. 31. The tickets are good for travel until Jan. 9 without any holiday blackout periods.
