GARDEN GROVE : Free Compost to Be Offered to Residents

Share

Tree trimmings and grass clippings picked up by the city will go back to people’s yards this weekend.

Free compost will be offered Saturday to residents served by the Garden Grove Sanitary District, which is celebrating the success of its Clean Green recycling program. District General Manager Ron Cates said Monday that 2,000 tons of “green waste” is now being recycled each month, rather than being dumped in a landfill.

“The people have really jumped into the spirit of this thing and are doing a great job,” Cates said. “It’s well above our expectations.”

Clean Green began two years ago as a pilot program involving 700 residences in the sanitary district. The program proved to be successful, Cates said, so it was expanded districtwide in April and now covers about 27,000 single-family homes.

The compost will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot next to the Garden Grove High School gymnasium at Euclid Street and Stanford Avenue.

Residents should bring trash cans or heavy plastic bags to pick up the compost, Cates said. Material that is not picked up will be donated to the school.
