From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A bomb believed to have been planted by Basque separatists exploded before dawn outside a police barracks in Arnedo in north-central Spain, slightly injuring about 20 people. The device was packed with an estimated 110 pounds of an ammonium nitrate-based explosive commonly used by the separatist group Basque Homeland and Freedom, police said. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. It came just hours before Spain’s Supreme Court decided to investigate whether Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez and others were involved in organizing death squads that targeted Basque separatists in the mid-1980s.
