Van Nuys : Salvation Army Seeks Donations After Fire

Share

The Salvation Army is seeking donations to replace a batch of items destroyed in a fire at the organization’s Van Nuys facility last week.

Leslie-Anne Quinn, a spokeswoman for the Adult Rehabilitation Center at 6059 Van Nuys Blvd., said the Aug. 12 fire destroyed 52 carts of donated items in an outdoor storage yard and exploded 12 windows. No one was injured.

The items would have been sold in the organization’s thrift shops, with proceeds going to benefit the rehabilitation center.

The value of the donated items could not be calculated because the containers had not been inventoried, Quinn explained.

“You never know what you’re going to get,” she said. “There could have been some major antiques in there.”

Damage to the windows in the men’s residence section totaled approximately $30,000, Quinn said, adding that they are in the process of being replaced.

The fire’s origin is unknown, although authorities have speculated that a combustible item in the donation bins may have ignited in the afternoon heat, she said.
