COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : USC : Wachholtz Says Otton Has Slight Edge

Share

The coaching staff has given no indication as to whether Brad Otton or Kyle Wachholtz will start at quarterback in the San Jose State opener Sept. 9, but Wachholtz has a hunch on this one: Otton.

Otton started two games for injured Rob Johnson last year and completed nearly 60% of his passes. Wachholtz was academically ineligible.

” . . . If things stay even, like they are now, I think Coach [John] Robinson will probably go with Brad for the opener because he played last year,” Wachholtz said.

“Then I’d hope I’d get to start against Houston [Sept. 16].”

With six 300-pounders, this is easily USC’s biggest team.

Biggest of the big: nose guard Stu Gage, 6 feet 4, 330 pounds; defensive tackles Darrell Russell, 6-4, 330, and Anthony Sanford, 6-5, 305; offensive tackles Norberto Garrido, 6-7, 325, and Ken Bowen, 6-8, 320, and guard Phalen Pounds, 6-7, 310.

Chad Morton, freshman cornerback and brother of former USC receiver Johnnie Morton, is the fastest Trojan with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash. Sophomore wide receiver Anthony Volsan is a tick behind Morton, and freshman defensive back Daylon McCutcheon was clocked in 4.40.

McCutcheon and another freshman defensive back, Ken Haslip, have impressed with their coverage.
