Medaphis Corp. Lawyer Resigns: The nation’s largest manager of hospital business operations said its top in-house lawyer resigned after admitting she passed on inside trading tips about a criminal probe into billing practices at two of the company’s California offices. On June 13, federal prosecutors confiscated files from the Atlanta-based company’s Cyprus and Calabasas offices, which manage accounts payable and billing for physicians. News of the investigation in mid-June sent shares of the company down 26% in one day. The resignation of general counsel Pamela S. Topper is the latest setback for Medaphis, which is being investigated by the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles. It comes amid a federal crackdown on fraud in government medical reimbursement programs. Topper could not be reached for comment.
