Semtech Corp., a Newbury Park producer of semiconductors used in computers, communications and aerospace, has announced a 61% increase in sales during its fiscal second quarter over the same period last year.

And profits zoomed more than 400% during the quarter that ended July 30, the company said.

Net income in this year’s second quarter came to $1.5 million, or 28 cents a share, on net sales of $10.6 million, compared with net income of $273,000, or five cents a share, on sales of $6.6 million a year ago.

Semtech reported record new orders of $12.2 million in the second quarter, up from $5.1 million the previous year.

Sales of the company’s linear integrated circuits and voltage suppressors “grew significantly during the first half of fiscal 1996,” said John D. Poe, president and chief executive.

“This growth has been propelled by Semtech’s success in penetrating the global market for components for personal computers,” he added.

Poe said the company is increasing its research-and-development spending in the hope of developing new products.
