SHARING WARMTH: Los Angeles residents got a taste of life in the Valley on Monday. . . . The mercury reached 99 degrees at the Civic Center--a record high for this date--and not far from the 103 degrees in Van Nuys. Meteorologists said Downtown suffered from the lack of a cool sea breeze. Said one forecaster: “The whole L.A. Basin is warming up like the San Fernando Valley usually does.”

BABY BUST: Six years ago, High Desert Hospital pediatrician Dr. Ramasamy Mahadevan helped start a program offering poor, pregnant women the opportunity to have their babies at a hospital. Now, the one-of-a-kind program is being cut, a victim of the county budget crisis (B1).

TASTY IDEA: Who says school cafeteria lunches have to taste like cardboard? Not Sandy Gooch of Sherman Oaks, above, the founder of the Mrs. Gooch’s health-food grocery chain. With the help of chef Wolfgang Puck, Gooch wants to teach cafeteria food servers how to serve up tastier, more nutritious school-time fare. One idea: whole-grain pizza topped with government cheese (B1).

OLD NEWS: Police on Monday caught up with a man who allegedly earned up to $1,200 a week by taking newspapers from curbside recycling bins in the Valley (B5). . . . But not every scavenger wants money. In Downtown L.A., newspapers and other recyclables may be bartered for drugs. “It’s idiosyncratic to the community,” said one officer.
