Right on the Money
Don Heckman was right on the money about the Antonio Carlos Jobim night at the Hollywood Bowl (“Accent’s on Caracao in Tribute to Jobim,” Calendar, Aug. 25).
As brilliant as Herbie Hancock can be, something was missing. Joe Henderson hit his stride after a tune or two, especially the duo (with piano) version of “This Happy Madness,” which was done totally out of tempo. After intermission, Terence Blanchard’s opening tune was “Desafinado,” not “One Note Samba, “ which closed out the concert. Perhaps that original record of “Desafinado” by Stan Getz has us mesmerized forever, and rightly so. It would have been perfect if Getz, Joao Gilberto and Jobim could have been there.
How wonderfully the respect and tradition were maintained, while new rhythmic and harmonic concepts were explored.
