CHABAD HEADQUARTERS: Chabad of the Valley, a network of eight Hasidic Jewish organizations in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County, will celebrate the opening of a $3-million headquarters on Burbank Boulevard in Tarzana with a block party on Sept. 10.

“Carrying this building campaign and construction project through the throes of a recession and an earthquake was a formidable task,” said Rabbi Joshua B. Gordon, executive director of Chabad of the Valley.

The project was begun in 1989 when the need was recognized for a central community headquarters with larger classrooms and worship space.

In celebration of the opening, Burbank Boulevard will be closed to traffic for three hours starting at 1 p.m. Sept. 10. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony, concert, amusement rides, booths and kosher food stands.

LABOR DAY: The seventh annual Labor Day program of the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council will start at 7:30 p.m. Monday after a barbecue at the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society, 9550 Haskell Ave., North Hills.

The public is invited to the service and program, which features talks on affirmative action, jobs and the minimum wage.

SYNAGOGUE TALK: Irene Gut Opdyke, who helped save Jews from the Nazis in World War II, will speak during the lunch and general sisterhood membership meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday of Valley Beth Shalom, 15739 Ventura Blvd., Encino.

The cost is $6 for non-members. For reservations, call (818) 993-2437.

AMERICANS UNITED: Gerard Thomas Straub, author and former producer of the daytime TV dramas “General Hospital” and “Capitol,” will speak at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at a meeting of Americans United for Separation of Church and State at Woodland Hills United Methodist Church, 5650 Shoup Ave. He will recount his experiences producing Pat Robertson’s “700 Club.” Admission is free. For more information, call (818) 998-5414.

CATHOLIC SPEAKER: Author-seminar leader Kay Murdy of Hacienda Heights will speak Wednesday at the Catholic Community Luncheon in Barone’s Restaurant, 10123 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake, on “Faith, Hope, Love.”

Murdy, among other roles, was for eight years Scripture coordinator for a charismatic Catholic organization in the Los Angeles area. The cost is $9. For reservations, call (818) 784-1960.

ADDRESS CHANGE: Temple Ner Maarav hasn’t moved, but it does have a new street address.

The Encino synagogue has been listed at 5180 Yarmouth Ave. But congregation leaders decided that because the temple grounds also face busy Magnolia Boulevard, that would be a better address--so the temple is now at 17730 Magnolia Blvd.
