World IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Tamil Rebels Fire on Air Force Base

Tamil Tiger rebels fired mortar shells on the strategic Palali air force base in the rebel-held north of Sri Lanka, military sources said. A policeman and a civilian reportedly were killed and 11 people wounded in the attack by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross said the Tigers had promised not to harm the 144 hostages they have held since hijacking a ferry last week.
