Motorola Buys Site for $3-Billion Semiconductor Plant: The Schaumburg Ill.-based company said it has bought 230 acres about 20 miles west of Richmond, Va., for the previously announced facility. Construction should begin by the end of the year, and production should begin in 1998, with as many as 5,000 jobs filled within 10 years, said Tommy George, president of the Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector. George said Motorola needs the plant because the semiconductor industry is booming. The Goochland County facility will make Motorola’s PowerPC microprocessors.
