HUNTINGTON BEACH : City OKs Making Dog Park Permanent

Share

Part of Huntington Central Park has gone to the dogs--for good.

The City Council this week gave final approval for a permanent dog park, a fenced area where pets can romp without being on leashes.

“It’s just a nice amenity . . . where people who don’t have outdoor facilities can take their dogs,” said Councilman Tom Harman, who said he brings his boxer, Biggins, to the park once a week.

In March, the city opened the dog park, a 1 1/2-acre undeveloped site east of Edwards Street and north of Ellis Avenue, on a trial basis after dog owners raised money for a temporary fence.

In June, the Community Services Commission supported establishing a permanent park, saying that the facility has been very popular.

Community Services Director Ron Hagan said the dog park as well as equestrian trails near the site will be reconfigured to accommodate both uses.

A buffer between the park and the trail will eliminate potential conflicts between dogs and horses, he said.

Dog owner Don Thompson, who has been instrumental in opening the dog park, said the priority will be to raise money through community donations for a permanent fence.
