BREA : Council Votes to Raise Home Water Rates

Share

Residential water bills are going up about $8 a month to meet higher prices being charged by the city’s water distributors.

The Municipal Water District of Orange County and Cal Domestic Water Co. are now charging “more than a 30% increase over what we were paying for water,” Councilman Glenn G. Parker said. “We have no choice but to raise our rates.”

The City Council voted Tuesday to raise the residential water rate to $1.80 a unit from $1.38. A unit is about 750 gallons.

The average residence uses 19 units a month, officials said. The cost for that amount would be $34.20.

The city will offer a 15% discount to low-income households, officials said. The “Lifeline Rate” is patterned after the electricity discount available from Southern California Edison Co.

Residents who think they qualify or who want additional information can call City Hall at (714) 990-7600 and ask for the Water Department.
