Consortium to Develop Internet Ratings Software: Seeking to head off federal regulation, a group of 22 major technology and telecommunications firms are teaming up to develop industrywide standards for technology that would allow parents to block access to pornography and other material on the Internet. Based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the group plans to create “values-neutral” software, which third parties could then tailor to fit a variety of ratings schemes. The consortium, whose launch is expected to be announced Monday, includes Microsoft Corp., IBM Corp., Apple Computer Inc., Netscape Communications Corp. and the major on-line services.
