Bergen Brunswig’s president and chief operating officer Dwight Steffensen has resigned, the pharmaceuticals supplier said Friday.

Steffensen’s resignation will become effective in mid-October, but he will remain on the board. The company said Steffensen, who joined the company in 1985 and became president in 1992, is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Robert E. Martini, chairman and chief executive, will assume Steffensen’s duties next month until a successor is named.
