YOM KIPPUR: A panel of rabbis from the three major branches of Judaism will discuss the relationship of the core rites of Yom Kippur to sin and repentance in a special continuing education seminar Sept. 17 at the University of Judaism. Yom Kippur, the most solemn Jewish holiday, falls on Oct. 4 this year.

Reform Rabbi Denise Eger of Congregation Kol Ami, Conservative Rabbi Edward Feinstein of Encino’s Valley Beth Shalom and Orthodox Rabbi Rubin Huttler of Etz Jacob Congregation will lead the class, scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $18 per person. (310-476-9777)

BISHOP’S TALK: Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Sartoris, who has led the San Pedro pastoral region of the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese since March, 1994, will speak at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 209 E. Lomita Blvd., Glendale, during a regional meeting of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women.

Msgr. Arthur Lirette, the recently retired pastor of the parish, will celebrate Mass at 11:15 a.m. following the bishop’s talk. Lunch is $6. (818-244-9815)

REFURBISHED TEMPLE: The Verdugo Hills Hebrew Center has been around since 1941 and is one of the oldest Jewish institutions in the San Fernando Valley area.

But when the 65-family congregation holds an open house at 6 p.m. Friday in its newly refurbished building at 10275 Tujunga Canyon Blvd., Tujunga, the event will be under the synagogue’s new name--Temple Shomrei Emunah.

Rabbi Manny Goldstein will lead a rededication of the sanctuary on Sept. 23. (818-352-3171)

JAZZ PERFORMANCE: The New Orleans sounds of the Night Blooming Jazzmen and Cajun-style food will be featured at 6 p.m. next Saturday at Woodland Hills Presbyterian Church, 5751 Platt Ave., in a benefit for the congregation’s earthquake recovery fund.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door. There will be additional charges for food and refreshments. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. (818-348-3391)

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES: A one-day seminar for evangelical church workers who are involved in ministries serving children will be held Sept. 16 at Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, 438 E. Harvard Road, Burbank.

The traveling seminar, which is run by an organization called Children’s Pastors’ Conference, deals with such topics as “Using Puppets and Music in the Classroom,” “Helping Children, Parents and Families in Stress” and “The Spiritual Journey of a Child.”

The seminar, open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. Tuition starts at $29, lunch included. (800-324-4543)
