Four passengers were killed and one little girl was critically burned Saturday after flames engulfed their van in a South-Central parking lot, authorities said.

The driver pulled the girl to safety as the fire raged through the van, trapping three adults and a child before they could escape, said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

The girl was transferred to the County-USC Medical Center burn unit, where she was listed in extremely critical condition. The man suffered little if any physical injuries, Wells said.

The van was burning when it turned into a Bank of America lot near Central Avenue and 104th Street, witnesses told fire officials.

The fire was reported about 1:15 p.m., and the van was still ablaze when firefighters arrived.
