Fujitsu to Expand Memory Chip Plant: Fujitsu Microelectronics, the British arm of Japanese electronics giant Fujitsu Ltd., said it plans to spend $1.26 billion to double the capacity of its memory chip plant in England by 1997. The investment will entail setting up a new building at its existing site in Newton Aycliffe in County Durham. The new plant first will produce 16-megabit memory chips, then later add 64-megabit chips. Fujitsu expects production at the new plant to begin in mid-1997, reaching 30,000 chips a month by 1999. The company said it expects the expansion to roughly double its work force within five years to more than 1,000 people from 520.
