Valleywide : Return to 100-Degree Mark Likely Tuesday

The San Fernando Valley finally got a break from 100-degree temperatures this weekend, but the respite from the heat will not likely last long.

“There was a cooling period this weekend,” said National Weather Service spokesman Dennis Tussey. “There was a lower-pressure trough to the north of us and the high-pressure system over us moved east.”

High temperatures Sunday topped out in the 80s because of coastal air that moved into the Valley with a low-pressure system. High-pressure systems, which have dominated in recent weeks, usually block out moist ocean air and allow hotter, dryer air to move in from the deserts.

But the heat is coming back. “Unfortunately, there is a high-pressure ridge building in,” Tussey said.

That new high-pressure system will bring warmer temperatures Monday--with highs predicted at 92 to 95 in the Valley--and then a return to the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. But then, the high temperatures are expected to dip a bit into the 80s and 90s again by Wednesday or Thursday, Tussey said.
