In response to “President Lee of Taiwan Gets Reelection Nod.” Sept. 1:

President Lee Teng-hui has picked up where Ferdinand Marcos left off. The corruption among government officials which was rampant in the Philippines exists today in Taiwan. You state that Lee was reelected in resounding fashion by the Nationalist Party delegates, but fail to mention that the only ones allowed to vote were a select group who have financial interests vested in Lee’s presidency. Taiwan has become a dictatorship under Lee where wiretaps and strong-arm tactics are commonplace.

Lee has already stated he is willing to go to war with China in order to gain his goal of Taiwan’s independence. In the Taiwanese press he has reassured the people of Taiwan that the U.S. will back his attempts for independence.

If the U.S. government is willing to back this man, we must fully understand what he stands for. It is in our best interest to keep peace and avoid confrontations with warmongers who care for nothing except lining their own pockets.
