Southeast / Long Beach : DIVORCED PARENTING
Raising a child can be difficult for parents who are going through a divorce, but help is now available in a new class at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
School administrators teamed up with Norwalk Superior Court officials to develop “Healthy Parenting Styles,” a class that began this week and is being taught by a family counselor. The court can order parents filing for divorce to attend, but the class is open to all divorced parents in need of advice, said Arlene Rabens, assistant director of community education for the college.
The class teaches parents how to shield children from the conflicts between ex-spouses, especially if the child is the object of a custody battle.
“They’ll learn alternate forms of behavior, so as not to make the kid feel guilty for being with the mother if the father wants him, or vice versa,” Rabens said.
The four-week class will be repeated in October. The fee is $79. For information call: (310) 467-5050, Ext. 2521.
