Fluor Daniel to Help Install Fiber Optic Cable in Mexico

Fluor Corp. said Thursday that its Fluor Daniel subsidiary and a Canadian partner have been awarded a $380-million contract to construct and install 3,291 miles of fiber optic cable in Mexico.

Engineering giant Fluor said it has joined with Northern Telecom of Toronto in the job, which will create a fiber optic network connecting 33 Mexican cities, including Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

“This important project will serve as a model for the construction and installation of modern electronic telecommunication systems in Mexico,” said Jorge Borja, general director of ICA Fluor Daniel, which itself is an entity jointly controlled by Irvine-based Fluor and Grupo ICA, Mexico’s largest construction company.

The project is expected to be completed within a year for customer Avantel, a joint venture between Banamex, Mexico’s largest commercial bank, and MCI Communications, the long-distance telephone company.
