San Gabriel Valley : SWEET DEAL
The settlement is much sweeter than most thought for three women city attorneys who sued the City of Pasadena for discrimination.
Approved by the City Council this week, the settlement will cost more than $500,000--not the much-lower figure initially believed. Three of the four women who said men were being promoted ahead of them agreed to the deal.
Ann Higginbotham, a deputy city attorney, will get a paid leave of absence at $90,000 a year until May, 1997, when she will retire at half-salary. She will also receive a one-time $20,000 payment, city officials said. Her settlement alone is worth about $500,000, council members were told.
Two other female attorneys, Julie Westin and Ann Rider, will get $20,000 each. Westin, who was laid off in January, will be temporarily reinstated for two months. Rider will continue to work in the city attorney’ office.
The fourth plaintiff, Deputy City Atty. Carolyn Williams, has declined to settle.
