Update : Follow-up on the news : WESTMINSTER : City Delays Action on Signs Regulation
A proposal to regulate large political posters and other temporary signs has been delayed.
Some City Council members had proposed limiting the size of political signs to 15 square feet, saying that during election season the city becomes cluttered with posters that are unsightly and sometimes dangerous.
But city attorneys were concerned that any regulation on the signs could be considered a limitation on political free speech and could invite legal challenges.
The attorneys and city staff drafted an alternate proposal for all temporary signs: a maximum of 40 square feet for banner-type signs and nine square feet for free-standing signs with solid backing, unless specially approved by city inspectors.
But council members this week failed to agree on certain provisions, especially a plan to charge a fee for sign inspections.
