Caterpillar, UAW Announce Switch to Local Talks: Negotiators for both sides said they would hold the first set of local bargaining since the United Auto Workers’ contract with the company expired in 1991. The negotiators met for just 10 minutes Friday but emerged to announce the new effort at ending their 15-month strike. While companywide negotiations recess, local union officials and managers will try to reach agreements on issues particular to each plant. The meetings are to be scheduled for this week. The latest strike began in June, 1994, at plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Colorado.
