Mike Groh ran for one touchdown and threw for one as 11th-ranked Virginia won at Clemson, 22-3, Saturday for its first victory there in 39 years and 19 games.

The Cavaliers, 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, scored two first-quarter touchdowns and Groh threw a clinching 76-yard score to Patrick Jeffers.

“Right now, this team has a lot of goals as far as the season goes,” said Groh, who had 171 passing yards. “Winning at Clemson was not at the top of the list, winning a lot of games was.”

After Groh’s one-yard dive and Tiki Barber’s twisting 11-yard touchdown, Virginia sat back and watched the Tigers (2-2, 1-2) fall victim to the same strange phenomena that hurt Cavaliers during their losing streak at Clemson.

Clemson quarterback Nealon Greene twice lost fumbles in the second half with no defender close. The Tigers were called for 11 penalties, several in crucial situations.

No. 24 Maryland 41, Duke 28-- Brian Cummings threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns as the Terrapins improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1978 by beating the Blue Devils at College Park, Md.

Cummings, starting in place of the suspended Scott Milanovich, was 19 of 27 as the Terrapins (4-0, 2-0) defeated Duke (2-2, 0-2) for the 19th time in 22 games.

The Blue Devils trailed, 35-28, and had the ball with four minutes left, but failed to convert a fourth-down play from the Maryland 39. The Terrapins then got the clinching score on a 21-yard run by Buddy Rodgers.

Despite his fine performance and Maryland’s unbeaten record, Cummings could be headed for the bench this week because Milanovich’s four-game NCAA-mandated suspension for gambling is over.

“We’re not going to talk about that here,” Coach Mark Duffner said after the game. “We’ll make that decision sometime during the course of the week.”

Maryland plays at Georgia Tech Thursday night.

Baylor 14, North Carolina State 0--The Bears handed the Wolfpack its first shutout loss at home since 1962.

Baylor (2-1) built a two-touchdown lead on first-half scoring runs from Anthony Hodge and Shawn Washington and then handed the game over to its defense, which was spectacular in the rain, holding North Carolina State (1-3) to two first downs through three quarters and 138 yards.

Wake Forest 30, Navy 7--John Lewis ran for three touchdowns as the Deacons beat the Midshipmen (1-2) at Annapolis, Md.

Lewis scored from the three and the one in the first half, and from the nine on a fourth-quarter option. Rusty LaRue hit Marlon Estes with a 28-yard strike for the final touchdown for the Deacons (1-3).
