German Politicians Demand Release of Graf Information

Politicians in the state where German tennis star Steffi Graf is under investigation and her father jailed for alleged tax evasion demanded Monday that the state finance minister reveal all he knows about the case. Fritz Kuhn, head of the Greens party faction in the Baden-Wuerttemberg parliament, said that either finance minister Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, a conservative Christian Democrat, “puts all the facts on the table . . . or we’ll have to think about an investigative committee.”

Peter Graf was arrested in August for allegedly failing to pay taxes on millions of dollars. Officials said the arrest was necessary because he might try to flee prosecution. Steffi Graf also is under investigation in the case. Authorities have said there were no grounds to arrest her.

Investigators believe that the Grafs, in the years 1989-1992, failed to report $35.2 million in income, the weekly magazine Der Spiegel said. Spiegel added that as late as June, Peter Graf transferred $29.6 million from an Amsterdam bank to accounts in Monaco, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the isle of Guernsey.

Edmonton Oiler defenseman Bryan Marchment was suspended for five games by the NHL for a kneeing incident against Winnipeg’s Jason Simon in an exhibition game Sept. 18. . . . The San Jose Sharks have removed right wing Sergei Makarov, 37, from their roster, making him available to other NHL teams via the waiver draft Oct. 2.

Sherell Ford, selected 26th overall in the NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, signed a three-year contract with the team. Under the NBA’s new rookie salary cap, he is slotted to earn within 20% of $430,000 this season, $494,500 in 1996-97 and $559,000 in 1997-98.

Mark Adams was relieved as basketball coach at Texas Pan American because of accusations of NCAA rules violations and improper athletes’ benefits.

Starting in 2004, Olympic host cities will receive a smaller share of the multimillion-dollar revenues generated from the sale of broadcast rights. The IOC executive board reduced the percentage of TV money granted to host organizers from 60% to 49%.

Tonight’s exhibition game between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens is the final event slated for the 67-year-old Boston Garden. The banners will be taken down from the rafters Friday night and raised in the new arena Saturday.
