Police arrested four men Wednesday on suspicion of trying to steal computer equipment from a freight truck.

The truck driver, who was transporting more than $100,000 in computer parts, had stopped at a liquor store on Monrovia Avenue about 4:40 p.m. when he saw four men breaking into his freight truck, said Sgt. George Yezbick.

Running to the truck, he scared off the robbers, who dropped computer tape drives.

As the men were fleeing in a brown van, the truck driver called police. Two minutes later, Costa Mesa Officer Rich Allum saw a matching van on Newport Boulevard.

Police arrested Andreas Torres Delgado, 25, Luis Fernando Arreaga, 26, Miguel Sandoval Rivera, 30, and Mario Jose Lopez, 25, all of Los Angeles, Yezbick said.

“We think they are part of a gang from L.A.,” he said.

Investigators said Wednesday’s attempted robbery may be related to a string of recent truck break-ins in Los Angeles.

“If they are the same gangs that have done this in the past, we think there are about 80 of them who are hijacking trucks filled with computer parts,” Yezbick said.

The men were booked on suspicion of conspiracy of vehicular burglary, Yezbick said.
