BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Tentative Deal OKd in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates reached a tentative deal with prospective owner Kevin McClatchy, then asked major league baseball to review the proposal before signing a definitive agreement.

The review will set a time limit for McClatchy to show he has the money and possibly to make a down payment, plus completion of the debt financing, according to attorneys.

Gov. Tommy G. Thompson and Assembly leaders of both parties worked late trying to put together a compromise package to keep the Brewers in Milwaukee.

“We’re close, and I’m hopeful that we’ll have a positive vote of 50 votes for it,” Thompson said of the controversial plan that calls for increased taxes in Milwaukee area counties to build a $250-million retractable-roof ballpark.

Attendance dropped by 40% at San Francisco Giant home games this season and was the lowest in a decade. The Giants had a season total of 1,241,497 fans for 72 dates--an average of 17,243. San Francisco averaged 28,892 per game during the strike-shortened 1994 season. . . . Dallas Green, 61, who took over the New York Mets amid one of their worst seasons and managed them back to respectability on and off the field, signed a one-year contract extension. The team holds an option for the 1997 season.
