ANAHEIM : Public Gets Crack at Disney Ice

Share

The dual rinks of the new Disney Ice complex were opened to the public this week, with an open skating session Sunday and a series of classes that started Monday for children and adults.

Designed by Santa Monica architect Frank O. Gehry, the 90,000-square-foot skating complex at Lincoln Avenue and Clementine Street in central Anaheim serves as the home training rink for the Mighty Ducks pro hockey team.

The team has been practicing since Labor Day.

Public programs will include sessions for tots and their parents, amateur hockey leagues, and skating classes for those aged 3 and older.

“We’re trying to create programs for people who have never ventured into the sport,” said Disney Ice general manager Stacey Saterson.

The Walt Disney Co. built the complex on property donated by the city of Anaheim.

As part of an agreement with the city, 6,000 local schoolchildren will participate in free skating programs at the rink each year.

Also based at the rink is Disney GOALS (Growth Opportunities through Athletics, Learning and Service), a nonprofit ice hockey program for youth from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Anaheim.

Disney Ice is open seven days a week for classes and open skating sessions.

A series of special events are planned for Saturday afternoons during this grand opening month, including an open house Oct. 28 in conjunction with the Anaheim Fall Festival Halloween celebration.
