Miller Leads Gymnastics World Meet

Shannon Miller, the 1993 and 1994 world champion, built a slight lead over Dominique Moceanu in the women’s all-around competition at the World Gymnastics Championships at Sabae, Japan.

Miller had a score of 38.699, including a 9.787 in floor exercises, followed by Morceanu (38.536), Jaycie Phelps (38.337) and Kerri Strug (38.012).

In the women’s team competition, the 1994 silver medalist United States led with 191.722 points, followed by Hungary (184.745) and Greece (182.857).

In the men’s all-around, four-time U.S. national champion John Roethlisberger was fifth with 56.500 points.

China’s Li Xiaoshuang, the floor exercises gold medalist at the 1992 Olympics, led with 56.987, with Japan’s Hikaru Tanaka second with 56.800.

The U.S. men held third place in the team competition with 280.336 points behind Japan (282.060) and China (282.048).

Basketball

Kevin Garnett, the first player in more than 20 years to be drafted out of high school by an NBA team, agreed to terms with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a three-year contract.

No terms were disclosed, but under the NBA’s new rookie salary scale, Garnett, the fifth selection in the 1995 draft, will receive $4.66 to $5.59 million.

Philadelphia 76er guard Jerry Stackhouse, the third player selected in the 1995 NBA draft, will be sidelined two to three weeks because of a broken left hand.

Orlando Magic player-coach Tree Rollins, 40, the third oldest player in the NBA, announced his retirement.

Guard Voshon Lenard, who returned to Minnesota for his senior season after the Milwaukee Bucks selected him in the second round of the 1994 draft, signed a one-year contract with the Bucks.

Hockey

The Dallas Stars acquired veteran center Guy Carbonneau from the St. Louis Blues for right wing Paul Broten.

Meanwhile, eight players changed clubs in the NHL waiver draft, with the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators each claiming two.

The Sabres acquired left wing Brent Hughes from Boston and right wing Rob Conn from New Jersey and lost center Bob Sweeney to the New York Islanders.

Ottawa took defenseman Justin Hocking from the Kings and center Ted Drury from Hartford.

Jurisprudence

Three University of Dayton football players, were arrested on charges stemming from a fight at a campus party last weekend, school officials said.

Quarterback Kevin Johns, 19, a sophomore, was arrested on charges of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Defensive tackles Jason Taylor, 20, a sophomore, and Richard Schuckman, 20, a junior, were charged with disorderly conduct.
