Piru residents seeking basic medical services no longer will have to drive to Santa Paula or Ventura in the near future.

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday awarded a $219,000 contract for construction of a health-care clinic in the unincorporated community just east of Fillmore.

Ventura-based Coffman Construction Co. won the contract to move several portable buildings from the Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura to Piru. The company will also construct a foundation and parking lot for the clinic.

The clinic, which will also serve residents of Fillmore, is scheduled to open in November, officials said. The clinic will provide immunizations, prenatal care and other services.

The clinic, the eighth of its kind in the county, will be staffed by two doctors and is expected to be open about 2 1/2 days a week.

The county also operates satellite clinics in Oxnard, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Santa Paula and Moorpark.
