Club Review : Catching Up With Action at Clubs

Share

One of the most notable trends in clubland is the move by dance clubs and bars toward booking live music each night. Hell’s Gate in Hollywood is among the pack, taking chances on young local bands and making it a great place to drop your $5 and be the first to check out next month’s rage. . . . The closing of Bob’s Frolic III last month became a boon for Martini, which picked up Bob’s booker Mary Nixon on Wednesdays. Nixon conjured up “Acme,” a night of live alternative music offering an average of three bands. In addition, the Hollywood venue now offers “Astrolounge,” a Tuesday night affair also featuring live alternative music. . . . The Internationalist, a retro-jazz dance scene at Mogul’s in Hollywood, recently moved to Saturday nights but is scheduled to return to Fridays beginning Oct. 10. Among its entertainment highlights: dancing, performance art, magicians and at least one “groovy movie,” not necessarily in that order.
