Garden Show Has Things for Kids, Parents

With just a little help from their parents, children can become enthusiastic gardeners. And at the upcoming Los Angeles Garden Show, they can learn lots about gardening--and then have some fun when their patience wears thin.

Among the show’s attractions will be an old-fashioned carousel, Punch and Judy puppet shows and a tropical rain-forest garden created by landscape architect Roy N. Leisure, with a 10-foot-tall gorilla complete with sound effects.

The child’s country play garden, created by the Pasadena Garden Club and planted in morning glories, English daisies, pansies and Johnny-jump-ups behind a quaint picket fence, will feature a tepee, a playhouse and a sandbox in a sailboat. One corner will showcase children’s vegetable gardens.

Grown-up gardeners also will find plenty to do at the show, with 21 specially designed gardens to tour, floral displays, cooking and gardening seminars and demonstrations and a marketplace of plants and accessories.

The Los Angeles Garden Show runs Oct. 18 to 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 N. Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia. Tickets are $5 before the show, $6 at the gate. Children 7 and under are free.
