SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Angry exchanges between coaches and players forced an end to Saturday’s 31-0 nonleague victory by Los Angeles Ribet Academy over St. Margaret’s at Dana Hills High.

The game was halted with nine seconds remaining after one of the officials said players were “out of control.”

The nastiness started with 15 seconds left and Ribet leading, 25-0. The Frogs had possession on the St. Margaret’s three-yard line, when Ribet quarterback Justin Troup threw an incomplete pass in the end zone. As players got ready to line up for the next play, St. Margaret’s Coach Brady Lock and defensive coordinator Clint Jones screamed to their players to “get” Troup.

But Troup, who scored two touchdowns in the game, outran the pursuing players to the end zone, where a brief skirmish ensued. There was more shoving on the point-after attempt as Troup, the Frogs’ kicker, was decked after missing the kick. Though no flag was thrown, officials ended the game.

Players from both teams shook hands after the game, but Lock and Ribet Coach Marlin Lane didn’t.

“Any coach can do what he wants in a situation like that,” said Lock of Lane’s decision to pass, “but I wouldn’t do what he did. He wants to create all of this animosity and it isn’t necessary.”

Said Lane, still fuming: “They were yelling to take our quarterback out near the end, so that’s why I told him to throw it.”

Six St. Margaret’s turnovers--four of them interceptions--kept the Tartans (0-5) winless. Devin Montgomery had three interceptions for Ribet (4-1). He also rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries.

A one-yard touchdown run by Montgomery and a 14-yard return of a fumbled punt by Troup gave the Frogs a 13-0 halftime lead. Montgomery added a touchdown run early in the third quarter and Troup tossed a 13-yard scoring pass to Xavier Rideout with 11:49 left.
