From Staff and Wire Reports

Rafael Ruelas lost a unanimous decision to Sweden’s George Scott on Saturday in a 12-round lightweight fight on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

It was Ruelas’ first fight since losing his International Boxing Federation lightweight title to Oscar De La Hoya on May 6 in Las Vegas, a second-round knockout that ended the Sylmar native’s year-plus reign as IBF champion.

With the victory, Scott improves his record to 27-1. Ruelas drops to 43-3.

In failing to win the lightly regarded World Boxing Union title, the Ruelas jeopardizes a proposed December bout against former junior-lightweight champion John John Molina.

Lennox Lewis, known for his right-hand punching power, scored three of four knockdowns with his left hand and stopped Tommy Morrison in the sixth round of a heavyweight bout at Atlantic City, N.J.

Lewis, 30, a former World Boxing Council champion, was too strong for Morrison and dominated the bout from the outset, knocking Morrison down in the second, fifth and sixth rounds, cutting him over the right eye and under the left eye, and almost closing the right.

The end came when referee Mills lane stopped the bout at 1:22 of the sixth round after Morrison got up from the second knockdown of the round.

Lewis showed that he definitely is not simply a one-handed fighter as he did tremendous damage with his left. He did score in the fifth round with a right uppercut, but the left was his big weapon on this night before a crowd of 8,369 fans.

“I nullified his left hook,” Lewis said. “I got an arsenal filled with punches. The best of Lennox Lewis is yet to come. Put the right opponent in front of me and different things come out.”

Lewis improved to 28-1 with 24 knockouts. Morrison, who had won eight in a row, is 45-3-1.
