What’s Left After the Trial

Marcia Clark may have been on the losing side in the O.J. Simpson trial, but there’s still hope she can pull out a victory in another highly competitive battle.

Kansas publisher Lefthanders International lists Clark in its current Lefthander Magazine as one of five nominees in the Public Personalities category in its 1995 Lefthanders of the Year contest.

The magazine, touted as “the world’s only magazine for lefthanders,” opens from left to right and is dedicated to honoring southpaws. Featured on the cover of the latest issue is left-handed game show host Wink Martindale.

It won’t be easy for Clark. Her category includes President Clinton, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, presidential aspirant Sen. Bob Dole (who is listed as being on the Lefthanders International board of trustees, along with former Presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford), satirist Dave Barry and the always tough “other.”

Beyond the personalities category, there is the prestigious Overall Lefthander of the Year category, which pits Clark and her competitors against such well-known celebrity southpaws as football and baseball star Deion Sanders, Super Bowl quarterback Steve Young, tennis champion Monica Seles, comedian Tim Allen, actor Keanu Reeves, “ER” actress Sherry Stringfield and talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

Southpaws are urged to fill out the form by publisher Dean Campbell (presumably writing with their left hands) because “there will be a lot of press coverage associated with the naming of the winners, so make your vote count.”

Contingency Plan

Now that the Simpson trial is over, speculation is growing on what future job opportunities await the scores of lawyers involved.

One option might be become the next Larry H. Parker. Parker, California’s best-known personal injury lawyer, made his name running testimonial television ads featuring his clients.

A Colorado company is offering do-it-yourself infomercials “to educate the public on the confusing and complicated process of personal injury law.”

The company, Network Affiliates, promises the infomercials “can be customized to fit any practice’s marketing needs” and that each infomercial “incorporates testimonials from clients” and “those whose lives have been profoundly changed by an accident.”

Do Unto Others Nicely

In another twist in attorney advertising, the latest issue of California Lawyer magazine notes that lawyers who advertise on radio have been flocking to Los Angeles Christian music station KKLA-FM and other similar stations around the state.

The reason? “Listeners are more inclined to trust advertisers on Christian radio than on other stations,” according to the magazine.

The magazine notes that pitches tend to be subdued, such as one recent one by a Woodland Hills firm that said, “At the law offices of Berglund & Johnson, they don’t condone the ruthless gouging of insurance companies for unreasonable sums of money.”
