GOP’s Hostility Toward Gays

Share

In reading “Pariahs in Their Own Party” (Oct. 6), about the Republican Party’s response to gay Americans, I have a question for the ultraconservative’s notion of a “gay agenda.”

Gays and lesbians are more strongly asserting themselves now than at any other time in history. They ask questions like why should my difference be a target for so much misunderstanding and hate? Why can’t I be acknowledged for my participation in society’s example of hard work, strong moral character and the love of another just like everybody else? Why must I be singled out as an exception to the rule?

The questions are simple and legitimate. To be excluded from equal participation in our society on the basis of sexual orientation is fundamentally un-American. For the Republican Party to align themselves with this exclusion is a disgrace.

* Your article regarding the Log Cabin Club and the Republican Party was a real disappointment. As chairman of the L.A. County Republican Party for the 42nd Assembly District, I and my fellow committee members have supported the Log Cabin Club in its efforts to participate in local Republican activities. While it is true that some of the national leadership of the party have made decisions not to accept contributions from the Log Cabin Club for political reasons, our local committee has always welcomed the full participation of Log Cabin Club members.

There are many differences of opinion among members of the Republican Party on issues ranging from abortion to welfare reform to prayer in school and gays in the military. But we all agree on the need to elect Republicans to public office.

* Log Cabin clubs are a sign of the pluralism that makes America such a great country. Gay people have every reason to support limiting government power, so it’s no surprise some would find Republican rhetoric attractive.

Prominent Republican politicians are intolerant of homosexuals. These same Republican politicians have not delivered on their promise of limiting government.

Log Cabin activists who want to promote freedom and tolerance would be welcome in a party that stands for freedom and tolerance--the Libertarian Party. Libertarians stand for less government, lower taxes and tolerance of diverse lifestyles.
