DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: More than 100 demonstrators are expected to join hands today and block traffic on a busy San Pedro street in an effort to heighten awareness of domestic violence.
The noon demonstration at Ninth and Gaffey streets is being held by San Pedro’s Rainbow Services’ battered women’s shelter and the Harbor Area YWCA.
“By bringing the issue of domestic violence literally onto the streets, we are showing that violence against women affects everyone,” said Rainbow Services executive director Connie McFall.
Molly Henry, assistant executive director for the Harbor Area YWCA, said organizers did not obtain a police permit for the demonstration because the idea of officers diverting traffic away from the rally would defeat its purpose “to momentarily halt business as usual” and get people to think about domestic violence. . . .
