NHL ROUNDUP : Oilers Hand Devils Their First Loss

Bill Ranford had 38 saves and Zdeno Ciger had a goal and an assist as the previously winless Edmonton Oilers handed the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils their first loss of the season, 3-1, Tuesday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

The setback also was the Devils’ first since losing the fourth game of the Eastern Conference finals to Philadelphia last season and ended a string of 16 consecutive victories, six each in the playoffs and preseason and four to start this season.

The Oilers came into the game having lost four games this season while being outscored, 24-5. In winning their first four, New Jersey outscored its opponents, 16-5.

Chicago 6, Florida 3--Gary Suter scored two goals, including the game winner, and had an assist, ending the Panthers’ four-game winning streak in a game at Miami.

Murray Craven and Sergei Krivokrasov each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks.

Winnipeg 5, Tampa Bay 2--Dallas Drake, a holdout during training camp, scored two goals and was a major presence at Winnipeg.

Detroit 3, Calgary 3--Darren McCarty scored twice to help the Red Wings extend their unbeaten streak to five games at Detroit.

The score was tied, 3-3, going into the third period. The Flames outshot Detroit in the period, but couldn’t beat goalie Chris Osgood.

Toronto 7, San Jose 2--Mike Gartner and Sergio Momesso each had two goals as the Maple Leafs finally took advantage of their power play at Toronto.

Toronto’s power play unit, successful only four times in 29 chances before the game, scored twice in the first period.

New York Rangers 5, New York Islanders 1--Glenn Healy and Ray Ferraro, two former members of the Islanders, each had big nights to lift the Rangers at Uniondale, N.Y. Healy made 22 saves and Ferraro triggered a four-goal burst in the first period.

Boston 7, St. Louis 4--Sean McEachern scored twice and his short-handed goal broke a third-period tie at St. Louis.

The Blues entered the game with a three-game winning streak but saw goaltender Grant Fuhr pulled midway through the third period.

Washington 4, Dallas 3--Dale Hunter’s power play goal with 14:46 to play broke a tie and the Capitals continued their strong start in a game at Dallas.

NHL Notes

Tie Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs was suspended for eight games and fined $1,000 by the NHL for sucker-punching Ulf Samuelsson, a blow that left the New York Ranger defenseman unconscious and with a concussion. . . . The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Igor Ulanov from the Washington Capitals for a 1996 third-round draft choice.
