Idaho Agrees to Store Nuclear Waste Until 2035
Idaho has signed an agreement that will allow the federal government to store nuclear waste in the state--but for no more than 40 years, Gov. Phil Batt announced.
Former Gov. Cecil Andrus took the federal government to court over the nuclear shipments, which have taken place since the 1950s.
The agreement, signed Tuesday by Batt, the Energy Department and the Navy, allows the federal government to store more than 1,100 new shipments of spent nuclear fuel at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory.
But the federal government must remove all of the spent fuel by 2035 or face fines of $60,000 a day, up to $20 million a year.
